Lung Cancer Statistics

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 92,000 men and 81,000 women are diagnosed each year with cancer of the lungs and bronchi (the air tubes leading to the lungs). Among men, the incidence of lung cancer has been declining; however, lung cancer is the largest cause of cancer deaths for women in the United States, killing an estimated 73,000 women each year - more than breast and ovarian cancers combined.

Women and Lung Cancer

A recent study by I-ELCAP researchers found that women were twice as likely as men to develop lung cancer when comparing similar smoking histories. The study was published in the July 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association and involved 17,000 subjects from CT screening sites across North America. In the study, women were found to have 1.9 times the risk of developing lung cancer as men when the results were analyzed to control for age and smoking histories.

Based on this research, it is even more critical that teen girls and young women avoid smoking cigarettes, even on a social basis. The findings suggest that women's lung cancer risk can be significantly affected by even light tobacco smoking.

While women are twice as likely to develop lung cancer, they are half as likely as men to die from it once it has developed. Because of this, women can gain even greater benefit from an early detection CT Lung Screening.

Jupiter Medical Center offers a CT Lung Screening program as part of our comprehensive center. To learn more about the benefits of this screening, visit the CT Lung Screening page on this website.

Smoking Cessation

Quitting smoking is one of the most important steps a smoker can take to improve the length and quality of his or her life. Stopping smoking can be tough but smokers don't have to quit alone. Jupiter Medical Center is partnered with the Everglades AHEC who provides a series of tobacco cessation classes to the community. For more information on upcoming classes, visit the Palm Beach County Classes & Events Calendar

*Note that registration is open for the class series through week two. After week two, registration is closed until the next series.
